Born in Bogotà, Colombia in 1974, Kassem begun studying Industrial Design in the Xavier University of Bogotà in 1993. His graduation project ‘Ossian’ was exhibited in Bogotà, Quito, London and Varese. Graduating in 1998, he transferred to Italy to work at Whirlpool Europe’s Design Studio in Varese. In 1999 he won a scholarship for a one year Master in Communication and Visual Design at The International College of Arts and Sciences of Milan. During this year he continued to work at Whirlpool in the areas of Fabric Care and Microwave products. In 2000 he assumed the role of product and graphic designer for Dish Care products. He developed together with the GCD “Ritual”, a future kitchen concept exhibited at Milan Furniture Fair in 2004. With this project he won the “Lapiz de Acero” design award from Colombia. In 2003 he transferred to Milan to collaborate with Stefano Giovannoni Design Studio developing projects for Alessi, Oregon Scientifi c and Deborah among others. In 2005 he collaborated with Fabio Novembre Design and Architecture Studio developing projects for clients such as Meritalia, Capellini and Alessi. In 2005 he was hired as a senior designer by LG Electronics in Milan, where he developed numerous design concepts of mobile phones and electronic appliances. He often worked in international teams not only in Italy, but also with the headquarters in Seoul. In 2008 he started a 2 year collaboration with Steelcase Inc. designing offi ce furniture. This collaboration brought him to Grand Rapids, and Strasbourg. In 2012 he moved to Amsterdam, to collaborate with Marcel Wanders Studio. In parallel, since 2006 until today he works as a design consultant, developing his own concepts and working with companies in Europe, US and Colombia. He has taught a furniture workshop for the Master program of Interior Design at the IED in Milan, and has been invited as guest lecturer to universities in Italy and Colombia.
